Abstract

Distributed algorithms originated from networks (actually, protocols are special algorithms designed to implement communications) and from operating systems (more precisely, from cooperative programs). Moreover, unprecedented development of distributed applications make inevitable the mastery of distributed algorithms as they constitute the core of those applications. The ADP project aims two complementary goals: (1) to understand the ``deep'' structure of distributed settings and (2) to develop distributed applications where synchronization and control are of primary concern. The main research topics are the understanding of theoretical bases of distributed algorithms (namely, causality, data consistency and distributed synchronization), the design and the implementation of fault-tolerant services for reliable dissemination of information and for consistent distribution of objects, the implementation of a distributed system for cooperative work and the implementation of a debugger for distributed programs.
