ESTIME
Modeling heterogeneous media requires specific methods.
As a first example of such a medium, consider the underground. On one hand, one tries to construct images of its structure through seismic or electromagnetic methods. These are inverse problems. On the other hand, flow in the underground is modelled for various applications concerning the environment or petroleum engineering: management of water resources, contaminant transport or reservoir simulation.
Another example of an heterogeneous medium is the core of a nuclear plant. In this case the problem is to study its neutronic behaviour.
The Estime group contributes to the formulation of efficient numerical methods for the solution of parameter estimation and modeling problems as those just mentionned. He is mainly interested in three areas of application: flow in porous media, seismic inversion, neutronics.
All these applications require large computer resources and provide interesting examples for parallel computation. Therefore Estime is interested in algorithm aspects (for instance domain decomposition) as well as in efficient implementation on various parallel computers.
